so we've decided to have our reception at our neighborhood civic center which is quite a bit nicer than it sounds - brand new, beautiful inside, gazebo outside with a big field next to it...but I just reviewed the contract to book it and it says if we serve alcohol there will have to be TWO police officers from the sheriff dept. to serve as security that we have to pay seperately...is this normal?
If I am personally paying these men (or women) to basically chaperone the reception does anyone know if they will atleast dress like the other guests so it doesnt seem as if its a bust? lol It seems a bit of overkill to have two cops at the neighborhood civic center , doesnt it?
maybe its not a big deal since i've never seen police officers at other houston weddings maybe they're just...inconspicuous? can someone please let me know if they've had experience with this also?

my reception venue is also requiring security. one of their rules is that security has to LOOK like security--wearing a badge, in uniform. I don't have the option to have them look like the rest of the guests--otherwise I would count my stepmom as my security--she works in law enforcement.
I also have to have 2 officers (minimum of 1 since I'm having alcohol, and since I'll probably have more than 100 guests, that adds another). it's $25/hour for College Station PD, who I'll be hiring for 4 hours. yea, I'm looking at paying $200 just for security that I probably won't NEED but it makes the venue owners feel better and reduces their liability. so no, it does not seem like overkill to me, it actually seems reasonable because it reduces the liability on the people who own the venue.

Yes this is normal. I saw this at a lot of venues I looked at. I know for my venue if we served alcohol we would have to have two cops. Just serving beer/wine we don't.

It is common and unfortunately they won't look like guests. I don't agree either. I think that you should at least be allowed to get your own security bc I've always thought it was like 50p/hr. I could be wrong

yep this is very normal. It's for the safety of your guests as well as the venue. It's a liability thing. It's usually pretty cheap.
